After a couple days of no real signal to speak of— never fear, folks. It’s here, ready, and sloppy as ever *XOXO*
The drive has been largely beautiful. Every time I want to give in to the weight of my lids the pure scenic adventure of it all pulls my cricked neck back up at attention. I think I’m falling in love all over again.
With any luck each of us are doing the very same.
We miss Declan.
It’s hard out here knowing we are missing a limb. You can’t help but wonder “what good is Voltron without it’s whole right arm?”
Turns out still pretty effective.
But all the same, each of us regular viewers know the truth— lucky for these saps out here on the road they have no A/B comparison to know better.
I’m here, tipsy, at the hotel bar in Little Rock as the Alexi grab a bite to eat; I’ve sated the beast on two packs of Top Ramen, happy to be pushing the envelope of broke-king contentment by pulling each penny out of my pocket like a bent tooth.
Balling on a budget? more like being broke on a budget. But even still this has been what I already recognize as a pivotal experience in mine and each of our lives.
(to double back a couple beats) Though it’s hard not to miss Dex on each inside joke, every show, & all the intensive GTA V rampage sessions, I had been joking with Austin from Sherry that since the three of us (Alexi & myself) have been playing together for 15+ years it’s probably pretty beneficial that we sort out some of these old, festering, friendship-fueled resentments-and-the-like on our own before we fully subject Declan to that— as with any joke the punch is based on truth.
If sometimes you can’t hear me it’s because sometimes I’m in parenthesis.
Sorry, had to type out that Steven Wright bit as it played to what is, besides me and a paused GTA V screen, an empty hotel room at the four points in Little Rock, AR.
On a more serious note it’s really been so fun out here and I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.
One time the police stopped me for speeding and said ‘the speed limit is 55 miles an hour’ and I said ‘I know, but I wasn’t going to be out that long’.
Ok, last time— I promise.
I think the last thing I remember getting addicted to before this was that orange/red, Mexican spice-power that my mom used to keep in the cupboard before she realized I was putting a hole in my stomach.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time.
Alright. That one seems all too relevant. I think I’m gonna be up all night.
It’s here— our first tour! We’ve done some short runs here and there but we’re proud to say we’ll be getting in the van for a two week loop from New Orleans up to Nashville onward towards Denver, Vegas, and back, connecting the dots along the way with the help from friends we’ve been lucky enough to make on this end of our journey.
Months (often 4-5) of planning went into hammering out our itinerary; from deciding internally what’s doable for us to securing venues and fellow musicians across multiple states, it’s been a huge exercise in the discipline needed in attempting such foresights. A great amount of care went into not stepping on any of our personal endeavors related to career, family, relationships, or any other projects each of us may be involved in.
Despite such concerns on our end, as they obviously and often tend to, things beyond our control shifted and landed in a way that warrants this, our first ever blog post.
Our dearest golden boy, multi-tool, and general cy-punk wizard, Declan, had a separate tour shift around under him and is currently in a position where he feels (and we agree <33) that his best interest is to tend to the cattle and grain on the homestead *cowboy emoji*
A fortunate by-product of Dex having been on tour is we had the opportunity to fine tune a set for Stubb’s featuring just us three— we spent time rearranging vocal harmony, representing various figures with different instruments, and generally challenging ourselves to find new arrangements for these songs we’ve committed our hearts and bodies to playing.
Of course Declan is a huge part of our sound (and will always be) but in this challenge we’ve found a way to tap into a slightly more raucous, raw nerve with the songs that we’re choosing to play in his absence this go around. There are absolutely no off-put feelings between any of the projects or individuals involved on either end, we totally just want the best for our friends personally, financially, and certainly in terms of them reaching all of their goals.
We are fortunate on our end to be able to trudge forward on this run as a temporary three piece.
Though we’ll all miss Dec this Dec while we’re out there I’m having a hard time seeing this any other way; from Declan originally joining on as our bassist after Lopez had black-out punched Alco in the face in front of a What-a-burger (we’re v rock/n/roll like that), the amount of fun I had preparing for and performing at my first solo show last month at Hole in the Wall (which I plan to continue to do on occasion 🌺), to the situational curveball at hand, the one constant is our goal of sharing these songs.
All we can hope to do is find the perfect arrangement for the moment we’re in, quarter pounded black outs and all.
think of it like musical yes-anding ;;)
Just wanted to make it clear that Declan will play on all in town dates (literally the only reason he wouldn’t be is if he’s already playing out of town) and will 100% be a part of any/all future touring/recording! You can expect to see a special set from all of us at Spiderhouse Ballroom Saturday, December 1st for our send off show 👻
and we absolutely cannot wait to announce this very special bill
see you soon —XO
